HISTORY OF PARIS - GARE DE L'EST
The Gare de l’Est in Paris is one of six major railway stations in the French capital. Its history dates back to the 19th century, a period marked by the development of France’s railway network.
Construction of the Gare de l’Est began in 1847, under the direction of engineer François Duquesnay. It was inaugurated on August 7, 1849 by Prince-President Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, later Emperor Napoléon III. The station was designed to be the main rail link between Paris and Eastern France, as well as serving as an international terminal to Germany and Eastern Europe.
Over the years, the Gare de l’Est has undergone several expansions and modifications to accommodate increasing rail traffic. In 1885, architect François-Alexandre Duquesney led a major renovation that gave the station its current appearance. It features a majestic facade with sculptures representing the towns served by the railway lines.
During the First World War, the Gare de l’Est played a crucial role in transporting troops and supplies to the front. During the Second World War, it was the departure point for many deportees to the concentration camps.
After the war, the station was modernized to meet growing passenger needs. It has become a major hub for national and international rail links. Today, Gare de l’Est serves destinations such as Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna and Zurich, among others.
Beyond its functional role, Gare de l’Est has also become an emblematic Paris landmark, appreciated for its historic architecture and lively atmosphere. It is the departure point for many travelers exploring Eastern France and Central Europe.
