HISTORY OF PARIS - GARE DU NORD

The Gare de Paris-Nord, also known as the Gare du Nord, is located near some of the capital’s most emblematic landmarks, such as Pigalle and Montmartre. It is at 18 rue de Dunkerque, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, in an area where most of the streets are named after towns.  It is one of the most famous stations in Paris.

Located in the city’s 10th arrondissement, it is one of France’s biggest railway stations and is also known as one of Europe’s busiest.

It’s a strategic location for getting around Northern France and neighbouring countries. It offers a wide range of transport options: high-speed trains with national (TGV) and international (Eurostar, Thalys) services, mainline trains, TER, RER, metro, bus and taxi services.

The history of the Gare du Nord dates back to 1846, when the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord was set up to build a railway line between Paris and the town of Calais in France. The Paris-Nord station was inaugurated in 1846 and immediately became a great success due to its proximity to the centre of Paris and its service to many destinations in France and Europe.

Over the years, the Gare du Nord underwent several transformations and renovations to meet the growing needs of passengers. In 1864, a new façade was built to replace the original, which had become too small to accommodate the growing number of passengers. In 1867, a new building was built to house the platforms and trains.

Over the course of the 20th century, Paris-Nord station underwent a number of transformations to become the modern station we know today. In 1981, for example, the Gare du Nord was renovated and modernised to provide greater comfort for passengers and improve the efficiency of the station.

Served by numerous train lines, including the Thalys, which connects Paris with Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne, and the Eurostar, which connects Paris with London, and also a major rail hub, serving destinations in France and Europe including Lille, Calais, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Brussels, Paris-Nord station is today a must for travellers from all over Europe.

In short, Gare du Nord is one of the most famous and emblematic stations in Paris, offering major rail services to many destinations in France and Europe. Its rich history and the many transformations it has undergone over the years make it a must for travellers from all over Europe.
